Portrait of Ruby Martinez Alvarado.

Juana Martínez Alvarado, better known as Ruby Martínez, began her journey with the Immigration Project in October 2024 as a Paralegal in the Champaign office for the ILSP team. Her passion for helping her community with immigration processes stems from her own experiences as an immigrant. Ruby and her family immigrated to the United States from Mexico in 1991, so she understands the feelings of needing support, being heard, and feeling understood.

Ruby is a proud mother of three boys—Gio, Jesse, and Daniel—and a grandmother to three wonderful grandchildren—Adan, Elizabeth, and Santiago—who bring her immense joy. Initially, she focused on achieving her goals in healthcare and worked at both Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City, IL, and Carle Hospital in Urbana, IL. For over ten years, she balanced her time between work and family while employed at Slagel Family Meats.

Despite her successful healthcare career, Ruby’s passion for one-on-one interactions with people led her back to the field. After working at Carle Hospital until May 2024, she sought a change and found her calling in the legal field. Applying for the Paralegal position, she was hired soon after, calling it the best decision she has ever made. Ruby is dedicated to learning and progressing every day in her new role.

Currently, Ruby resides in Champaign with her husband, John, and their son, Daniel. She embodies the belief that “Once a dreamer, always a dreamer.”
