Joana Ramírez was born and raised into a family of Mexican immigrants in Illinois’ neighboring state of Iowa. She recently graduated from the University of Iowa receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies along with minors in both Latina/o/x and International Studies. Although her time as an undergrad reinforced her desire to work in the voluntary sector, much of her drive to serve immigrant communities grew from her upbringing in a rural community where resources for immigrants were scarce, limited and largely inaccessible.
Joana came across the opportunity to serve as a VISTA with TIP, after completing an internship at Iowa City’s Office of Equity and Human Rights. Amazed at how well TIP’s mission aligned with her own experiences, she is delighted to connect with rural immigrant communities throughout Illinois as Outreach Coordinator through her service term as an Americorps VISTA.
