The Immigration Project

Volunteer or intern - test

What We Do

We utilize thousands of volunteer hours every year, and we are excited to offer valuable opportunities that help an intern or volunteer make a positive and lasting contribution to immigrants’ lives.

PLEASE NOTE:

With the exception of translation and interpretation, we rarely have one-time needs, preferring a minimum commitment of 3 – 4 months.

Volunteer Opportunities

Case Assistant

Case Assistants are very involved in the logistics of preparing paperwork and following-up on actual cases, and can sometimes involve client interaction. English only is fine.

Language Team

If you have a strong language aptitude (fluent or advanced), we would love to have you on our language team. For translating needs, you would help translate civil documents like birth and marriage certificates, in addition to client statements of hardship or abuse, marketing and communications, and general correspondence.  For interpretation needs, given the higher level of difficulty involved, we are seeking volunteers with high-level language skills. Interpretation may take place in-person, through video chat, or on the phone). Our primary needs are for French, Spanish, Lingala, and Kanjobal though if your skill is with a different language, please still apply as our needs do vary, and ideally we would bolster our language team with a wide variety of language competencies.

Administrative/Clerical

If you enjoy helping people directly over the phone or in-person, then you might be a great fit for this position. Ideally, we are searching for folks who are bilingual (English-Spanish) to help in this role. This is a crucial role which ensures expedient access to legal services for new and existing clients.

Archiving Team

We will be soon making a concerted effort to recruit volunteers specific to an archiving project which our Executive Director is prioritizing. It’s not the most glamorous volunteer role, and it would not involve direct client involvement. However, this project will ensure that The Immigration Project’s considerable case history is more readily accessible to our legal advocates, which should streamline and improve our ability to analyze and manage cases.

Legal Student Volunteer

This opportunity is only available for current law students. Legal student volunteers assist attorneys with case research and writing documents, increasing our capacity to serve clients from all over the state. These volunteers might conduct legal research, develop statements, draft briefs, locate information in FOIA request records, and perform other tasks as needed for cases.

OUR Impact

The immigration process is arduous and often feels rather dehumanizing, but the workshop made this huge step in my life feel achievable and even enjoyable because the team [was] genuinely lovely and happy to help.

  – A former Citizenship client

Being able to accomplish my goal of becoming a US citizen would have not been possible without assistance, support, and advocacy from the Immigration Project. I will forever be thankful for the Immigration Project's determination, dedication, and hard work with my case…
